Artist Statement
.
Rural folklore is the primary area of interest in my work. I seek to depict the unseen landscape: human interpretations of natural surroundings comprised of folklore, superstition and history. It reflects physical immersion in nature, whilst also representing the wider cultural experience of landscape.
Personal experiences of certain landscapes, combined with folktales and literature from these places, are the sources upon which I draw. My practice follows a process of distillation, selecting the most significant symbols from a body of imagery and stories. These symbols, placed in new contexts and exaggerated through colour, form the basis of my paintings.
